On August 8, 2026, a ceremonial opening of the building of the future Kazakhstan-China Joint Earthquake Research Center took place in Almaty. The Center is being established on the premises of the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research LLP under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The event was attended by Lieutenant General Chingis Arinov, Minister of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Darkhan Satybaldy, Akim of Almaty; Su Fangqiu, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Almaty; representatives of the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration; representatives of government authorities and the scientific community; and invited guests.
The establishment of the Center is the result of agreements reached at the highest state level between Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, as part of the further development of bilateral cooperation in seismology, geophysics, and seismic risk reduction.
As part of the ceremony, departmental awards of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan were presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development of the civil protection system and the implementation of the project to establish the Center.
An important part of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research and the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration. The document provides for the development of scientific and technical cooperation in geophysics and seismology, joint research, exchange of scientific expertise, specialist training, and the development of modern seismic monitoring technologies.
Following the official ceremony, the guests toured the building of the future Center and learned about its technical capabilities and key areas of future activity.
The Kazakhstan-China Joint Earthquake Research Center will focus on conducting joint scientific research, improving seismic monitoring and earthquake early warning systems, developing cooperation in seismology and geophysics, and training highly qualified specialists.
The establishment of the Center opens up new opportunities to combine the scientific and technical potential of Kazakhstan and China and to further develop practical cooperation in the study and reduction of seismic risks.
